Happy Birthday Oklahoma
On this day November 16th, 2007 at 9:16 am Oklahoma was proclaimed a state by Theodore Roosevelt. That means that 11 minutes ago our great state became 100 years old. We are one of the youngest states in the United States but very proud. As one that has been in the United States Air Force and traveled to many places I still must admit that Oklahoma is my favorite place to live. Yes I have been places that made good travel destinations but no place that has the friendliness and compassion as my home. I took off this morning so I could have some lab work done at the doctor’s office and my supervisor told me to take the whole day off. I do not think I will argue with him. I think we may go see some of the Centennial festivities today. There is going to be a huge concert at the Ford Center this evening with many of Oklahoma’s famous singers. The ones that I remember off the top of my head are Garth Brooks, Toby Keith, Reba McEntire, Carrie Underwood among others.
In Guthrie, there is a parade going on right now celebrating 100 years. I have heard estimates of more than 100,000 people expected to be there. This is because Guthrie was the capital of Oklahoma before it was moved to Oklahoma City in 1910. I cannot imagine what it would be like to have to find a parking place in Guthrie with 100,000 people. The city of Guthrie only has around 11,000 residents. This is a day to celebrate our state’s history and the passing of this milestone. The state has made this day an official holiday and all but critically needed employees are off today. I just heard they are going to have a very large fireworks show in Bricktown in downtown Oklahoma City this evening. I do have a scheduled event this evening to go to my son’s girlfriends school singing concert at Del City High School. I am sure we will have a good time. It should be an eventful day.
