Cicadas in Oklahoma

This picture shows a macro image of a cicada shell.  Every summer in Oklahoma these cicadas come out of the ground and come out of their shell.  They fly into the trees and make a loud clicking sound that can be heard more than 100 yards away.  The locals refer to them as “locus”.  I have no idea where that term came from but that is what they are called here.  If you called them their true name “Cicada”, people would not know what you were talking about.  When ever you hear them in the trees, it is a true sign that summer is here.  They seem to like it best when the temperature is over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.  This year we have had a lot of rain keeping the temperature lower than 100 and the cicadas have been late coming out.  This picture was taken on the pull string of our lawn mower.
